Lawmakers should OK freedom to marry

Recently, legislative leaders in Illinois announced that in early January they will seek to pass a measure winning the freedom to marry for same sex couples in our state. The time is now for the General Assembly to pass this measure of basic fairness and dignity.

Many lesbians and gay men in Illinois — our neighbors, our friends and our co-workers — grew up just like me: dreaming of their wedding day. It is time for Illinois legislators to give our fellow Illinoisans the freedom to realize these dreams.

Same-sex couples will strengthen the institution of marriage. They want to marry because they love one another and know that it provides immeasurable support for their families and for families all across our nation.

Recent polls show that a majority of voters in Illinois support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in our state. We deserve a policy that reflects our values — values of fairness and dignity for all Illinoisans.

When the legislature meets in January, we hope Illinois will join the growing ranks of states that welcome all couples to the freedom to marry the person they love. Now is the time.
