A celebration of Ravi Shankar’s life

Thanks for publishing a locally reported article about the life and work of Ravi Shankar, with comments from Anuradha Behari and Madan Kulkari of regional Indian arts communities.

As I lived in Chicago in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, I had the opportunity to hear Shankar’s scores for Satyajit Ray’s “Apu” trilogy of films. I lived many years in parts of the U.S. where such “art films” and concerts such as Shankar’s at Mandel Hall in 1961 were not available.

In the small town where I lived from 1966 to 1973, even Beatles records had to be specially ordered from a local shop that normally handled mostly popular country music.

It was wonderful, over the years, to see Shankar’s popular success and his lifelong contribution to fine music and his Indian tradition in music. It has also been a pleasure to find, now that the tides of life have brought me to live in DuPage County, that this area is now enhanced by many communities and institutions of cultural backgrounds from around the world, including those who organize concerts and arts events bringing such world eminences as Shankar to this region. This pleasure adds to the celebration of Shankar’s life.
