Losing Kane candidate concedes District 22 race
Bob Getz hoped a discovery recount would have paved the way for a court challenge.
When it didn’t work in his favor, he decided Monday to concede the Kane County Board District 22 race to Douglas Scheflow, the Republican who beat him by 13 votes.
“I’ve been advised it will cost me approximately $10,000 to proceed to the next step,” the Democrat wrote to Scheflow in his letter of concession. “I did not seek any contributions for this election, and the bank account is empty. I have, therefore, decided to bring this initiative to an end and concede the election to you.”
Both men were running for a seat in the 22nd District, which includes parts of western Elgin and Elgin Township. Scheflow was seated earlier this month.
Last week, Getz had a discovery recount of two precincts, but the net result was minus one. His next step would have been to ask a judge to intervene, a move that he determined was too costly.
“It’s tough to lose an election that close. It speaks well to both candidates,” said Stan Bond, the county’s chief deputy clerk.
