A Glen Ellyn man has been sentenced to four years in prison for beating a neighbor in the head with a baseball bat, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Joseph A. Martinez, 40, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on Tuesday and was sentenced by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin.

Martinez and the 39-year-old male victim both lived in an apartment complex on the 300 block of Duane Street. They were visiting with another neighbor in April when an argument ensued, prosecutors said.

Martinez was told to leave but soon returned with a baseball bat and repeatedly hit the victim in the head and in the arm, authorities said. The victim was severely injured and needed 15 staples to close a head wound, according to prosecutors.

Authorities said Martinez has previously served time for aggravated battery. When he was arrested in April, he was on conditional discharge for assault and on court supervision for driving under the influence.
