Will County Board approves $175.7 million budget

The Will County Board has approved a new budget of almost $176 million.

County officials said Thursday that the 2012-2013 budget sends a message to taxpayers that the county will ride out the economic downturn in a fiscally responsible way.

The spending plan includes no tax increases.

It relies on about $5.2 million in new revenues. Most of those funds come from additional landfill hosting fees generated by a new gas-to-energy plant at the Prairie View Landfill. The county also saw an increase in sales tax revenues and interest earned on its investments.

Those increases helped to offset decreases in property values. The county said the average property declined almost 8.4 percent in value this year.

The new budget will take effect Dec. 1.
