NW Ind. mall shooting stems from basketball fight

HOBART, Ind. — A police investigator says a dispute among teenagers over an earlier basketball game sparked a fight and gunfire inside a northwestern Indiana shopping mall.

Hobart police Detective David Evans tells The Times of Munster the three teens arrested after Saturday night’s shooting at the Westfield Southlake mall are facing criminal recklessness and other charges.

No one was injured in the shooting. Off-duty officers at the mall quickly caught the three boys ages 14, 15 and 16, while Evans says another teen remained at large.

The mall near Interstate 65 and U.S. 30 was evacuated after the shooting but reopened Sunday.
