Sykes’ 31 lead Green Bay past Chicago State 72-67

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Kiefer Sykes scored 31 points and Green Bay converted 41 of 48 free-throw attempts to beat Chicago State 72-67 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Sykes was good on 17 of 19 shots from the charity stripe and also had seven rebounds and nine turnovers. Brennan Cougill added 10 points for the Phoenix, who beat Chicago State for the 13th straight time.

Jamere Dismukes led the Cougars with 18 points. Jeremy Robinson added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Chicago State, with nine newcomers this season, led 13-1 in the early going and was on top 33-30 at halftime. The Cougars still led 65-61 after a Robinson basket with 5:09 remaining, but Green Bay closed the game on an 11-2 run.

The two teams combined for 57 turnovers — 30 from Green Bay and 27 from Chicago State.
