App reviews: Bad Piggies, Quizlet

Bad Piggies

Following up on its mega-hit Angry Birds, Rovio has turned the tables and made a new game with porcine protagonists. A blend of a physics game and a building puzzle, players are given an array of materials to build something — a plane, a cart, a hovercraft — to navigate through treacherous terrain. The stages are brain tickling but not difficult enough to frustrate. You can also earn extra points by meeting smaller goals, such as meeting a time limit, to make each level a little more challenging. Free, for iOS and Android.

Quizlet

Believe it or not, midterm season is upon us, and Quizlet is a little app aimed at keeping you in the teacher’s good books. Essentially a flashcard app, Quizlet is great for vocabulary, geography and other quizzes. One big drawback to this app is that you can’t create flashcard sets from your phone — you’ll have to head to the service’s website for that. Still, having your study materials at your fingertips for those little breaks during soccer practice or rehearsal is worth having to put on a little prep ahead of time. Free, for iOS devices.
