Rolling Meadows garage destroyed in fire

Quick firefighters were able to prevent a blaze from spreading from a Rolling Meadows garage to two nearby homes Monday afternoon.

A police officer driving on the 2200 block of Rohlwing Road spotted the detached garage on fire at 1:47 p.m.

When Rolling Meadows firefighters arrived three minutes later, the 2½-car garage was engulfed in flames, said Lt. Jeff Moxley.

Flames from the garage were melting the siding off both a house in front of the garage and a home next door, officials said.

Both homes sustained minor damage to the siding but no structural damage.

There were no cars inside the garage, but the blaze caused about $10,000 in damage to the garage’s contents and $35,000 in damage to the structure and nearby siding.

Officials said a man was home when the fire broke out but was not injured.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire but said it does not appear to be suspicious.

Firefighters from the Arlington Heights, Palatine and Palatine Rural departments assisted at the scene.
