Elgin motorcyclist killed in crash near Geneva
An Elgin man died early Wednesday morning after his motorcycle struck a semitrailer truck at Kirk Road and Cherry Lane near Geneva.
Kane County sheriff’s investigators believe excessive speed on the motorcyclist’s part contributed to the crash.
Eric Mondragon, 27, of the 400 block of Douglas Avenue, was riding south on Kirk when he hit the truck, which was making a left turn from Cherry on to Kirk. The truck had a green light.
The crash happened around 7 a.m.
Mondragon was wearing a helmet. He was thrown from the motorcycle, which traveled another 200 yards before stopping, according to Lt. Patrick Gengler, the sheriff’s department’s spokesman, in a prepared statement.
Deputies do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors.
Mondragon was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Kane County circuit court records, Mondragon has convictions for failure to wear a seat belt; speeding; reckless driving; driving without insurance; driving on a suspended license; failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; disobeying a traffic-control signal; and avoiding a traffic control signal, from 2001 through 2011.
