Parolee arrested after police chase in Elgin

A parolee who was released from jail less than two months ago was arrested Monday after leading Elgin police on a chase during a traffic stop.

Officers from the Elgin gang crimes unit attempted to stop a vehicle on Ball Street at Crystal Street at 2:18 p.m. Monday, but the driver sped off westbound after briefly stopping, according to police.

Police said the driver abandoned the vehicle on the 500 block of Hawkins, about two blocks from the initial stop. The driver took off on foot for several blocks but was stopped by police about 15 minutes later, officials said.

Steven T. Luellen, of the 700 block of Highland Avenue, was taken into custody and charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, obstructing justice and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police.

Luellen, 32, was paroled June 15, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. His most recent charges included burglary and mob action, but Luellen's criminal record includes charges of aggravated battery and reckless discharge of a firearm, according to prison records.
