15-year-olds charged in Elgin murder

Two 15-year-olds have been charged with murder in connection to a gang-related shooting that killed a 16-year-old Elgin teen Thursday night.

The Elgin Gang Crimes Unit arrested Ricky J. Moreno and Mario A. Williams Monday evening after the Cook County state’s attorney’s office authorized first-degree murder charges against both suspect, police announced late Monday.

The teens are charged with the murder of Nestor Alvarado, who was shot in the chest during a gang-related altercation outside a business on the 800 block of East Chicago Street at about 7:40 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Witnesses provided police with a description of a vehicle involved the shooting, and officers located the car a few minutes later at Dundee Avenue and Symphony Way.

The victim’s friends were driving him from the scene, presumably to a hospital, when police located the vehicle, Elgin Police Lt. Dan O’Shea said.

Alvarado had suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, and he was pronounced dead shortly after at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, according to police.

Moreno, of the 100 block of Stonehurst Drive, and Williams, of the 1100 block of Yew Court, were being held at the Elgin city jail Monday night after they were apprehended without incident in Elgin, O’Shea said.

Both teens were charged as adults and are due in bond court Tuesday morning in Rolling Meadows.

In a statement released Monday night, Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the murder was “senseless violence that ended the life of a 16-year-old and will dramatically change the life of the two responsible for it.”
