Gurnee farmers market ready for new season

Gurnee Park District’s weekly farmers market is about to make its seasonal return.

Running from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays, the market will open its 2012 season June 8 at Esper Petersen Park, Grand Avenue and Kilbourne Road. The market runs through Sept. 28.

This year the market has grown to more than 35 vendors and includes past favorites such as Smith Farms, Wildflour Bakery, Sharpening by Dave and Twin Garden Farms.

In addition, the market will host a variety of special events each week, including free cooking classes, educational workshops, children’s crafts, live entertainment and more.

Kristi Chirempes-Murray, the park district’s community relations manager, said visitors will always find something different at the market.

“The market is a thriving cultural marketplace where homespun, one-of-a-kind foods, produce and crafts are at the heart of our lively market,” Chirempes-Murray said.

“Our location at Petersen Park is perfect for meandering from booth to booth and enjoying a few hours of fresh air, energetic vendors, and beautifully landscaped surroundings. Plus, we offer entertainment throughout the season.”

As long as supplies last, visitors to the park district’s booth will receive a free, green farmers market tote bag.
