Chicago museums to close 3 days for NATO summit

Three of Chicago’s top tourist attractions will close for three days instead of one day for next week’s NATO summit.

The Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Shedd Aquarium announced Wednesday that the institutions will be closed from May 19-21. The U.S. Secret Service originally said the institutions would be closed on Sunday, May 20, the first day of the NATO summit. That’s the same day protesters plan a rally and march on Michigan Avenue.

Representatives for the museums say they support and welcome the summit. But they say schedules were adjusted because of each organization’s “close proximity” to McCormick Place, the site of the summit. All three institutions also are near the protest route.
