Mariano’s Fresh Foods wants to build Lake Zurich store

A Mariano’s Fresh Market grocery store is proposed for Route 22 and Quentin Road and could add between 200 and 250 jobs to the Lake Zurich area, village officials said Friday.

Roy Witherow, interim village administrator, said Mariano’s has a targeted opening date of Jan. 1 and would anchor a four-store development at the northwest corner of the busy intersection.

Two smaller outlot businesses would be included at the location where Mariano’s wants to build its new facility, Witherow said. The outlot also has room for a bank facility, but none is in line to open there at this point, he added.

Attempts to reach someone from Mariano’s Fresh Market at its parent company, Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. in Wisconsin, were unsuccessful Friday.

Proposed developers and plans for the 73,000-square-foot Lake Zurich store are under review at the village’s planning and zoning level, Witherow said. The village board is expected to vote on the development in two to three months.

The shopping center would also feature 375 parking spaces. Mariano’s plans to open its own type of specialty restaurant inside the facility, he said.

Mariano’s has stores in Vernon Hills, Palatine and Arlington Heights and two in Chicago.

The upscale grocer is also opening a store in August in Hoffman Estates. That store will be located inside a vacant Dominick’s Finer Foods Store at Hoffman Village Shopping Center at Barrington and Golf roads.

“It’s absolutely a great pickup for the village of Lake Zurich,” Witherow said. “It’s a strong anchor store along the Route 22 and Quentin Road corridor for us. It should be a great development.”
