$5,000 damage in Batavia commercial fire

No one was injured Friday in an early morning fire in a commercial building in Batavia, authorities said.

Batavia firefighters were called at 12:52 a.m. to Portola Packaging, 951 Douglas Road, for a fire that started in a basement air unit, officials said in a news release. A shelving unit had also caught fire.

Fire department officials said the alarm system activated, alerting workers to safely evacuate. A sprinkler system had contained the fire to the one room, and that damages were minimized because of it, Battalion Chief Randy Banker said.

Light smoke drifted throughout the building resulting in $5,000 worth of damages.

Firefighters left the scene shortly after 2 a.m.

According to its website, Portola designs and manufactures tamper-proof plastic closures, bottles and equipment for the beverage and food industries, as well as plastic closures and containers for the cosmetics industry.
