Naperville cops say speed, alcohol triggered crash

A Shorewood man who was driving drunk at speeds of at least 100 mph was hospitalized Tuesday after an early morning crash, Naperville police said.

Dean A. Suominen, 36, of the 500 block of Ca Crest Drive, was traveling east on Ogden Avenue near Rickert Drive in Naperville around 12:52 a.m. when his car struck a curb on the southeast corner of the intersection and went airborne, Sgt. Gregg Bell said.

The 2008 orange Dodge Charger crashed into a ravine on the east side of the road and lost contact with the ground a second time, Bell said.

The car flipped and crashed into a steel beam supporting a billboard by the parking lot of a hair salon near the intersection, police said.

The car’s engine, windshield and a tire dislodged during the accident. The metal rim from one tire struck an unoccupied 2001 Audi parked in the lot, damaging a door on the passenger side.

Suominen had to be freed from the car and was taken to Edward Hospital where he was being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said. No one else was injured.

Suominen was charged with driving under the influence and driving too fast for conditions, Bell said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit at (630) 305-5285.
