Driver cited in crash that flipped school bus

The driver of a school bus that collided with a pickup truck then flipped on its side Saturday, injuring several members of the Libertyville High School volleyball team, has been issued a citation, Grayslake police said Sunday.

Jorge Tamayo, of Chicago, was ticketed for failure to yield while making a left turn. Tamayo, who’s age was not available Sunday, is scheduled to appear in a Round Lake Beach courtroom on Nov. 23, police said.

Thirteen Libertyville students were slightly injured in the collision, which took place about 7:45 a.m. at Route 83 and Washington Street in Grayslake.

Eleven of the students were taken to area hospitals for what paramedics described as minor injuries. Most, members of the school’s volleyball team, suffered cuts and bruises, Grayslake Battalion Chief Jon Cokefair said Saturday.

The small white school bus involved in the crash is used for athletic events and was taking the team to a volleyball match when the collision occurred, officials said.

Libertyville High School released a short statement via email Saturday afternoon stating that the students are fine.

“District 128 is pleased to report that all of the students and the coach involved in this morning’s bus accident in Grayslake have been treated and released from area medical facilities and that no one suffered serious injures,” Director of Communications Mary Todoric said in the statement.

The drivers of both vehicles and two students were treated at the scene and released, Cokefair said. Nine of the students were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, while two were taken to Grayslake Emergency Center.
