Ind. DNR: Genetic tests find no Asian carp

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says genetic testing at Indiana ports and harbors on Lake Michigan have found no signs of voracious Asian carp.

The agency announced Friday that researchers from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend collected 125 so-called environmental DNA sample from five areas in northwest Indiana and found no evidence of bighead and silver carp. The two species of Asian carp are considered a serious risk to the Great Lakes because they are voracious eaters of food considered critical to native fish.

The agency says two species were first detected in Indiana waters in 1995 and have been found in the Ohio River, the Wabash, the East and West forks of the White River and the Patoka River.
