Quick look at crosswalk law
What: Illinois' new crosswalk law, effective since July 1.
How it works: Drivers must stop not just yield the right of way when necessary to pedestrians in all crosswalks. The law applies even if there are no traffic signals, stop signs or clearly defined crosswalk markings.
Supporters say: Law will increase pedestrian safety.
Opponents say: Rear-end crashes will be triggered because of drivers suddenly braking for a pedestrian stepping into a crosswalk as allowed by the law.
