Illinois to expand roadside memorial program

ROCKFORD -- Illinois residents will soon be able to buy temporary roadside signs along state highways to remember loved ones who died in vehicle crashes.

Earlier this year, Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Roadside Memorial Act into law. It allows roadside memorials for those killed in fatal accidents. Current Illinois law only allows memorial for those who died in alcohol-related crashes. The law is effective Jan. 1.

The law was inspired by 47-year-old Cheryl Miller whose son Adam died in a distracted driving crash. Miller says her goal is "awareness."

The Rockford Register-Star reports the new memorials will say "Reckless Driving Costs Lives." Name plaques also can be added. They will cost $150 and remain at a site for two years.
