Police investigating fatal Des Plaines car-bicycle accident

Des Plaines police continue to investigate an accident that left one person dead late Monday night.

Alavaro Chavez-Farias, 52, of Des Plaines, was riding his bicycle in the 500 block of North Wolf Road just after 8 p.m. when he collided with a vehicle traveling northbound, officials said.

A police report said Chavez-Farias had entered into the roadway just before the accident, but also states the vehicle was in the curb lane of the roadway. Officers said the accident reconstruction team believes the man rode over a curb and onto North Wolf Road right before he was hit by a black Cadillac Escalade.

Police said the driver of the vehicle told them he did not see the man until he was right in front his vehicle.

The bicycle did not have any lights attached to it, police said.

Chavez-Farias was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, officials said, where he was pronounced dead.

Chavez-Farias died of multiple injuries sustained during the crash, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No citations have been issued in the accident, but the investigation is still underway, authorities said.
