Former astronaut Lisa Nowak's Navy career is over

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Navy career for Lisa Nowak, a former astronaut who drove 1,000 miles to mount a bizarre attack on a romantic rival, is over.

A government panel made up of three Navy admirals unanimously decided late Thursday that Nowak should be separated from service. They also voted to have her service characterized as "other than honorable," and be downgraded from her current rank of captain to commander.

Florida Today reports that Nowak didn't comment on the decision.

Nowak was sentenced to a year on probation last November after pleading guilty to third-degree felony burglary and misdemeanor battery. Nowak confronted her romantic rival in the parking lot of Orlando International Airport in February 2007 after driving from Houston. Shipman had begun dating Nowak's love interest.
