U.S. charges 6 with being part of Latin Kings crimes

HAMMOND -- The U.S. Justice Department says six men it calls members of the national crime gang the Latin Kings are charged with racketeering conspiracy in Indiana federal court.

The department announced the charges Tuesday in Hammond.

The suspects are 33-year-old Alexander Vargas of Highland, Ind.; 30-year-old Jose Zambrano of Sauk Village, Ill.; and four Chicago residents: 44-year-old Sisto Bernal, 27-year-old Jason Ortiz, 23-year-old Brandon Clay and 20-year-old Jermaine Ellis.

The Associated Press left messages seeking comment at possible phone listings for Ortiz, Clay and Ellis. The others aren't listed.

The six are accused of racketeering activity in 2002-10. Ortiz and Clay also are charged with two counts of murder in Griffith, Ind.
