Small plane's landing gear fails at Ill. airport

CAHOKIA, Ill. -- A pilot and a passenger in a single-engine plane escaped injury after the aircraft's landing gear failed as they touched down at a southwestern Illinois airport.

Officials say the unidentified pilot and passenger walked away from the accident Saturday involving the Cessna 180 at the St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia.

Several fire departments responded, and the airport remained open while the plane was cleared from one of the two runways.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
