Arboretum planning Memorial Day party

Memorial Day isn't until next weekend, but the folks at the Arboretum of South Barrington have sent over their plans for the shopping center's block party on Saturday, May 29.

The event is anchored by 1990s alternative rock stars 10,000 Maniacs. They've mutated lineups since their heyday when they played President Clinton's inaugural ball in January 1993.

The band became chart-toppers that year for their appearance on "MTV Unplugged," which was followed by an album featuring an acoustic version of their hit "Because the Night."

Former lead singer Natalie Merchant has since departed for a solo career, but the band continues to perform. They'll play at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Arboretum near Higgins Road and Rte. 59. Michael McDermott goes on stage before the band at 6 p.m.

The day will kick off with a 9 a.m. 5K run/walk to benefit the Heart of a Marine Foundation, sponsored by the South Barrington Park District. There will also be face painting, rides and sidewalk sales throughout the day, as a well as a 10 a.m. village kite fly.
