Red-light camera fines begin tonight at Aurora intersection

Motorists who disregard traffic signals at East New York Street and Eola Road in Aurora will begin receiving $100 fines at midnight tonight, April 6, officials said.

The intersection has the highest number of accidents so far this year in Aurora and is the latest to be equipped with red-light enforcement cameras.

The cameras, which have been operational for seven days, record both eastbound and westbound traffic on East New York Street at Eola.

Similar cameras already are in use at three other intersections in the city. Officials say the number of accidents at those intersections has dropped 43 percent since the cameras were installed six months ago.

New York and Eola, located on the city's far east side, has been the site of 11 crashes through Feb. 28. It accounted for 53 accidents in 2009 and 58 in 2008.
