Support politicians who back bike plans
Ms. Delaney-Jenkins could not have been more right in the need and benefit of bike lanes. I would add multi use paths as well. We do have proactive governments and people. Among them President Obama, Sen. Durbin, Transportation Secretary LaHood and numerous state senators such as Nekritz, Pankau, and Millner. Unfortunately we also have detractors who feel spending money on pedestrians and bicyclists is a waste.
Citizens make a difference. Our voices are heard, but we have to speak up. Please write to your senators, representatives, mayors. Visit your local planning commissions. Join organizations like Active Trans and the League of Illinois Bicyclists.
The DuPage County Regional Bikeway Plan has been developed through the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference. The Plan has almost 500 total miles of regional and local routes, lanes, and trails with another 300 miles in the works.
The county just passed a resolution recommending the National Association of Counties support more federal funding for nonmotorized transportation and implement "Complete Streets."
Ride, and ride often.
