Newest judge gets his start on St. Charles Wiffle ball field
Congratulations to Clint Hull of St. Charles as he moves into his new post as an associate judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit. He's had a solid career in the Kane County State's Attorney's office, but here's some Hull trivia you may not know:
What was the first event in which Clint Hull was "introduced" to the community via newspaper photos and reports? No, it wasn't a classroom mock trial. It was a Wiffle ball game.
Nearly 30 years ago, Hull and his young friends in his St. Charles neighborhood built an impressive backyard Wiffle ball stadium and challenged a team of my newspaper colleagues in a game that would become The Wiffle Ball Classic for several years - with several other groups of kids.
Hull was an excellent player, and he carried similar athletic skills into soccer at St. Charles High School. This is a young fellow who learned a lot about success and hard work through athletics.
It's been a pleasure to watch his career soar, and the 16th circuit has added a winner.
A weekend for funds: Speaking of trivia, my team of Tri-Cities Exchange Club brethren finished in the middle of the pack at the Trivia Bee staged by the Literacy Volunteers of the Fox Valley last weekend. But what do you expect with questions asking the name of the airport where Charles Lindbergh landed after crossing the Atlantic?
It actually was a great weekend for area fundraisers. We wished we could have attended them all. But the best sight was this: Watching Sally Upham, in an early 1900s costume portraying Nettie Langs, and Sandy Perkins, dressed as Julia Plato Harvey, dancing up a storm with several others at the Mill Race Inn at the conclusion of the "Tapping Geneva History" fundraiser for the Geneva History Center.
In short, it was hilarious.
We also heard good things about the River Corridor wine-tasting event at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles and the Suicide Prevention "50 cooks" event in Batavia. All great ideas for great causes.
He'll need energy: Spotted along the Fox River trail: Kane County Cougars media relations coordinator Shawn Touney getting in a 10-mile run on a nice Saturday morning.
He'll need to be in good shape to make his way around the Elfstrom Stadium complex, with its new additions and the second deck.
Pushing healthy lifestyles: Christine Hurley of AMLI in St. Charles sent along a note that more than $2,000 worth of formal dresses was sent to Chicago from the Glass Slipper project we recently mentioned.
She was excited about the community response and asked if I would pass along a note about a health fair taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the AMLI clubhouse off Kirk Road near Main Street.
"Because of interest among our residents and in the community, we are conducting the first St. Charles Community Health Fair at AMLI," Hurley said.
Those who visit the health fair will receive information about massage therapy, skin care, aromatherapy, nutrition, yoga and other health messages from area businesses.
Information is available by calling (630) 587-5470.
