Letter writer out of touch
This is in response to Richard Rosenthal's letter on Feb. 25, in which he states his disappointment in an editorial questioning Obama's tax evading cabinet appointees. I have never read such an absurd opinion letter in my years of reading this paper. I figured it was time to write in for my own sanity. I am still not fully confident that his letter was a joke or not, but here goes.
Yes Rich, we should hold our representatives and appointees to a higher standard than what we would expect from "common folk." You state that these people should be of "unusual intelligence, insight and management skills," which you state you do not have.
You believe these officials should get a free pass for evading their taxes because they have taken a pay cut to "volunteer for the benefit of us." How absurd is that statement? They are very well rewarded with salaries many people only dream of and pensions that make most common folks' pay look like minimum wage. Too many are in it for the power and ego boost.
You also state to give them a break because they work "24/7." Twenty-four hours in seven days? I know quite a few people who work 60 hours a week, take care of their kids, (without the help of a nanny which many of your so-called public servants have) and then also volunteer without pay another 15 hours a week. Does that give them a free pass to skirt our laws and not pay taxes? I didn't think so. I guess in your world Blago was owed everything he tried to extort because he served us peasants on our behalf with such hard work and vigor. He is wondering where your letter was two months ago.
Should they have turned a blind eye to Al Capone's tax evasion because he donated hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to the poor and soup kitchens?
I just hope your not on a parole board.
