Engelhardt mom released from hospital
Shelly Engelhardt was released from the hospital Sunday, 10 days after being stabbed during deadly attacks in her Hoffman Estates home.
Engelhardt, 52, is now staying with a friend in the area, her son said Sunday, and is preparing for the funerals of her husband, Alan, 57, her mother, Marlene Gacek, 73, and her daughter, Laura, 18.
The three died from stab wounds suffered in the pre-dawn hours of April 17 in the family's home on Bluebonnet Lane, in what police are so far classifying as a lovers spat turned violent.
Police have charged D'Andre "Dre" Howard, 20, of Hoffman Estates, with their murders and he is being held in jail without bond. Howard is engaged to Amanda Engelhardt, 23, the oldest of Shelly and Alan Engelhardt's three children. He is also the father of Amanda's daughter, Stelliah, who turns 9 months old this week. Howard allegedly stabbed Alan, Shelly, Marilyn Gacek and Laura with a butcher knife. Shelly was the only one who survived.
Amanda, the baby, Alan's 85-year-old mother, and Shelly's sister were not physically injured, police said.
The family has planned a wake for all three - Alan Engelhardt, Laura Engelhardt and Marlene Gacek - from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Ahlgrim & Sons, 330 W. Golf Road, in Schaumburg.
The funeral for Alan and Laura Engelhardt will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 202 E. Schaumburg Road, in Schaumburg.
The funeral for Gacek will be held Friday, May 1, at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Hoffman Estates. The time of the service has not yet been set.
