Umpire says Chicago suburb's mayor punched him during game

MONEE, Ill. (AP) - A youth baseball umpire says that the mayor of a Chicago suburb punched him in the face and broke his jaw during a game.

Tim Nelson was umpiring a game in Monee on Saturday morning when he says he gave an extra swing to a 7-year-old girl. He said Monee Mayor Jay Farquhar, the opposing team's coach, got upset and sucker punched him.

A Will County Sheriff's Office spokesperson says interviewing of witnesses has begun and a report will be sent to the state's attorney to determine whether there should be charges. The league president says Farquhar has been suspended from the league.

An attorney for Farquhar claims that Nelson was the aggressor. Nelson admits he grabbed Farquhar's arm, but he says he did it after Farquhar called him a drunk.

Nelson said that he finished the game.

"I didn't know my jaw was broke, but I was bleeding from the mouth and I wanted to finish the game for the children," Nelson told WLS-TV.

WFLD-TV reports Nelson has had his jaw wired shut.
