Traffic Safety Division to stay in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he won't move the Transportation Department's Traffic Safety Division from Springfield to southern Illinois.

In a statement Friday, Quinn said moving about 140 employees to Harrisburg would have hurt the Springfield economy and the agency's operations.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced the move last spring as a way to save money on the division's Springfield lease and help the economy in Harrisburg.

Quinn noted a bipartisan legislative panel voted 12-0 against the move. Blagojevich had called that action advisory.

Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says it's possible the division will still move, but to another office in Springfield.
