26 Chicago students killed this school year

With about three months left in the current school year, the number of Chicago Public School students slain has reached 26, matching the total for all of last school year.

Most of the killings have taken place on neighborhood streets and not during school hours.

In an effort to come up with ways to stem the carnage, Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Ron Huberman has announced he will meet Thursday with Police Supt. Jody Weis.

Huberman said the problem of youth violence is much bigger than the public school system, noting district officials have been putting a lot of time and energy into coming up with a plan of action.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Roti of the organized-crime division said police have been working with school officials to develop gang-related intelligence from students in the schools.
