Illinois State Police director resigns

Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent has resigned, effective immediately.

In a statement issued Friday, Trent says "it was time for a change to do something else and spend more time with family."

Trent served with the Illinois State Police for 22 years before former Gov. Rod Blagojevich chose him as director in 2003. Trent is an Army veteran who served in Vietnam and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says a new director will be named soon. He thanked Trent for his 34 years of service to the people of the state.

Until a replacement is named, Quinn says first deputy director Charles Brueggemann will serve as acting director.
