Dog lovers seek to adopt rescued puppies

Dog lovers have rushed to animal shelters around Chicago in hopes of adopting 67 puppies that were rescued from a puppy mill.

Bradley Block of Chicago Animal Care and Control said Wednesday about 150 people showed up the shelter hoping to adopt one of the dogs. However, they were out of luck because the animals had already been sent to private animal shelters.

Demetria Newel, who lived in the house where the dogs were found Tuesday, was cited with 67 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. Officers found syringes and antibiotics, which Newell allegedly used to treat the animals if they had medical problems.

Nadine Walmsley of the Anti-Cruelty Society said most of the dogs won't be available for adoption until Friday, allowing them time to undergo a health evaluation.
