Time for Illinois to consolidate schools

With our national economy in the condition it is in, our governments - federal, state and local - need to explore ways to reduce costs. Passing tax increases to the property owners and state residents is neither appropriate nor timely.

Illinois should look at the cost reduction program being implemented in Pennsylvania. Gov. Rendell is reducing the number of school regions from 500 to 100. There is every reason to believe this reduction will not affect the quality of education while reducing costs for state residents. With the increased technology over the past decade or two, it is about time to utilize technology for cost reduction purposes. Industry operates in this manner to keep cost low and there is no reason that schools cannot be managed with the same processes.

When was the last time a major cost reduction program was implemented in the State of Illinois? Politics may play a role in this decision based on the unions, but the timing is perfect to consolidate and reduce costs. This consolidation program would be a win/win for the state and the public.

I'd urge Gov. Quinn to follow the lead of Gov. Rendell and take costs out of the system.
