System is stacked against the worker
Mr. Calomino, I just have to wonder who your "Americans for Prosperity" really represents. If your Fence Post letter, is any indication, you would have readers believe your group is a patriotic, knight in shining armor protecting the rights of the working class in Illinois.
If the Daily Herald's readers looked behind the scenes and found out that you were in all actuality, a communications lobbyist for big business in Illinois maybe that would and should disqualify you from being an advocate for the little guy. I'm sure it's not your average worker who can afford a strategic communications consulting firm to represent him or her.
The real reason for the Employee Free Choice Act is because the current process for forming unions is badly broken and is skewed in favor of those who oppose union representation for the American worker.
Legislation is necessary to protect workers' rights to join unions just like the rights of doctors to join the AMA and lawyers to be members of the American Bar Association. These organizations serve the best interests of their members and they don't have secret ballot votes. Why the disparity? Is this another shining example of two Americas?
If it wasn't for unions, there would be no 40-hour workweek, no workmen's comp, no health care, no social security or pensions of any type for the average worker. I think workers just have to look at who's making those millions of dollars in salaries to know who's being mislead and who should represent their interests.
Joe, I'm sure your strong ties with the Illinois business community will serve you well in the years to come but always remember where you came from and I am sure that will serve you just as well.
