Buffalo Grove's 50th will be great
I read Mr. Gollay's letter about Buffalo Grove's 50th anniversary and it made me want to ask two questions. First, does the Daily Herald get so few letters, that nonsense like Mr. Gollay's is what ends up actually getting published? And second, which is the more dominant characteristic evident in this letter, narcissism or know it all?
I am sure that the other readers were as impressed as I was with the vast collection of form letters Mr. Gollay has collected from politicians. I do not know what his ideas were, but rather than whine about them not being implemented, Mr. Gollay could have instead joined the village's 50th Anniversary Committee and been a part of the planning process that has been going on for the past two years.
As I drive through Buffalo Grove and see the light pole banners acknowledging the village's 50th anniversary, I do not feel as if I am going to "watch history pass right by us." Nor do I get that feeling when I read updates in the Village Newsletter, learn about the village's historical dates in the 50th anniversary calendar and wait for the upcoming events that everyone in the community will enjoy.
Mr. Gollay says, "we have a golden opportunity to boost and illuminate our village," and "we're letting it slip through our fingers." Maybe he would like the village to put a giant birthday cake on Lake-Cook Road with 50 neon-light candles. Is that the kind of "edge" he is looking for?
For me, Buffalo Grove's 50th anniversary is not about "setting a precedence for others to try to emulate," as Mr. Gollay says. It is about Buffalo Grove and the people who made up and make up our community. It is about remembering our history and celebrating our traditions.
Mr. Gollay might be concerned with whether our 50th anniversary celebration impresses people in other towns, but this Buffalo Grove resident is already impressed with what our village has done to honor this milestone.
And I look forward to the many upcoming events for me and my neighbors to enjoy.
