Severe weather reaches suburbs
The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory for northern Illinois today from 2 p.m. until 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.
A total of 2 to 6 inches of snow are expected this afternoon and tonight, with lake effect snow developing Wednesday morning.
Areas close to the Wisconsin border could see up to 6 inches, with southern areas seeing around 3 inches of precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur this afternoon and evening with lighter snowfall overnight.
The advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties, including limited visibility on area roads and expressways.
