Town hall meeting set on resources and laws regarding disabled children

Parents, teachers, administrators and social workers can learn more about the latest laws that have been passed on the federal and local levels, along with resources available for children with disabilities, at a town-hall meeting being sponsored by University of Illinois Extension in Kane County.

The meeting will take place at the Plainfield Police Department, located at 14300 South Coil Plus Drive in Plainfield, on July 16. The time for the meeting is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (light refreshments will be served).

"Regardless of a child's disability, they can learn" said Debra Buffett, special assistant, children with disabilities, University of Illinois Extension. "We want to provide resources that will help the learning process be easier for children with disabilities" Ms. Buffett continued.

The meeting will focus on the topics of transition education for children with autism. Transition education helps disabled students as they move from one grade level to the next or from lower school to post school environments.

This topic will be presented by representatives from the Illinois Department of Human Services/Autism division, The Autism Program of Illinois, and representatives from UIC Autism department.

Continuing education hours are available for teachers, administrators and social workers.

For more information about the workshop, contact Buffett at (708) 638-8270.
