New home, new start for Bandits
After three seasons in the National Professional Fastpitch League, the Chicago Bandits will open their 2008 home schedule tonight with a fresh approach.
Beyond the 11 newcomers on the roster, the Bandits will have a new field (Judson University), a new community to welcome them (Elgin), and a new chance at returning to the NFL playoffs.
Coming off of a rough 2007 crusade that saw the team's playoff hopes slide down the stretch, Elgin offers not only new terrain but also validation.
"We love Elgin," said head coach Mickey Dean, who has been with the franchise from the start. "They have done a tremendous job with the facility here, and it is a beautiful setting."

The Bandits are playing under a three-year contract with the City of Elgin and Judson University on a renovated field that the City of Elgin contributed $700,000 to renovate.
"The move gives us not only a sense of new beginnings, but also shows a new level of commitment from the organization. And the fan base is incredible."
With that kind of support, bouncing back from a 23-21 finish in 2007 shouldn't be a problem.
"One strength will be our defense, which makes very few errors," said Dean, who is entering his fourth season with the Bandits. "Pitching is another key. All of our pitchers have big game experience, and they each do a nice job of studying batters ahead of time.
"Hitting can be a strength as long as the girls understand that every hit doesn't have to be a home run. They have to trust one another and hit together."
Regardless of how the season unfolds, fans are guaranteed excitement from the Bandits, Dean said.
"It all comes down to team chemistry," said Dean. "Our players are blending together well, and are showing a good understanding of one another quickly. They are ready to play."
The home opener is part of a four-game series with the Akron Racers. The games on Friday, Saturday and Monday start at 7:05 p.m., while Sunday's game is set at 3:05 p.m.
Single-game tickets are $10, but season and group tickets are also available at www.chicagobandits.com. Judson University is located just south of I-90 and Route 31 off West River Road.
