AARP offers driver safety course
Henry Karolus will offer an AARP Drivers Safety Program class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the West Dundee Safety Center, 555 S. Eighth St. (Route 31). Participants must attend both days. The class is open to anyone age 50 and older. You do not need to be a member of AARP.
Upon completion of the course a certificate will be given that could mean a reduction in the liability portion of your auto insurance. To register, call (847) 426-4504. Cost is $10 due the first day with checks made out to AARP.
Enjoy a Sunday breakfast in Elgin
• The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 Men's Auxiliary will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the post home, 1601 Weld Road on Elgin's west side. Cost is $5 in advance or $6 at the door. Children, age 12 and younger, pay $4. Advanced ticket sales end at noon Saturday. For details, call the VFW at (847) 888-9809.
• The Elgin American Legion will host a breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the hall, 820 N. Liberty St. The breakfast features eggs to order, $4.50 to $5, omelets $5.50 to $6, white or wheat toast, pancakes, sausage, bacon, potatoes, ham, juice and coffee, and Bloody Mary and Screwdriver specials. Get a bargain at kids flea market
Did you get new stuff for the holidays? Sell your old stuff at the Children's Deep Freeze Flea Market at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Only kids may sell, but anyone is welcome to buy. Everything will be priced at $4 or less.
This event will be held indoors, so space is limited. Register in person at the Youth Center Help Desk. A signed parental permission slip is required at registration. Registration for this program began in December. Call the Youth Help Desk at (847) 429-4685 for availability.
Enjoy winter tales at Hawthorne Hill
The environmental science students from Elgin High School will share winter tales, night hikes, games, crafts and campfire fun, weather permitting, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive in Elgin. Children, ages 5-12, are invited to bring a blanket and enjoy a fun night out. Advance registration and fees are required. For details, call Deb Barr at (847) 531-7009.
