Briefs: Chili with chilly golf

Orchard Valley Golf Course, 2411 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora, will conduct its first Chili Bowl golf event at noon Jan. 27. The nine-hole event is $30 per person and includes greens fee, chili, beer and door prizes. Reservations will be taken starting today at the pro shop. Golfers can reserve a spot with a credit card, but fees will be collected the day of the event. The golf course must have frozen ground and adequate snow cover for the event. Soccer for toddlers

South Elgin parks and recreation department will hold an indoor soccer program for preschoolers who are interested in learning how to play the game. The program begins Jan. 15 and is limited to 3- and 4-year olds. It will cover the basics of passing, scoring and dribbling. It will be held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. every Tuesday from Feb. 19 to March 11 at the Community United Methodist Church, 400 W. Spring St. Cost is $32 for residents and $37 for nonresidents. Police targeting speeders:

St. Charles police are targeting speeders in a four-week safety campaign that began last week. Extra officers will be on patrol looking for speeders on Randall Road, Route 64 and Route 31. The effort is being funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Sting nets 52 citations

A recent traffic enforcement sting by Aurora police resulted in 53 citations, officials said. On Friday, police set up the operation at Indian Trail and Lake Street, the city's third-highest intersection for traffic crashes, police said. Last year, 80 accidents were reported there. During the operation, 75 vehicles were stopped with citations given for various infractions. Aside from the tickets, 13 warnings were given, 13 people were arrested and six outstanding warrants were served in a seven-hour period.

St. Charles chamber meets:

The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce will have a Business After Hours gathering from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Aquascape Inc., 901 Aqualand Way. The networking event will include appetizers, a cash bar and raffle. Call (630) 584-8384.

Preschool fair in Batavia

The Batavia Public Library will host a preschool fair from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17. Parents can talk to school staff members from multiple preschools in the Batavia and Geneva areas. No registration is required. The library is located at 10 S. Batavia Ave.
