Gas leak shuts down Hoffman Estates intersection
The intersection of Shoe Factory and Beverly roads in Hoffman Estates was briefly closed Monday morning following the onset of a natural gas leak.
The leak was apparently caused by a home construction crew's accidental break of a gas line near the intersection, Nicor spokesman Richard Caragol said.
The damage caused Hoffman Estates police to close traffic around the intersection for about 15 minutes as crews responded to the scene, he added.
The break was reported at 10:07 a.m., causing Hoffman Estates firefighters to immediately respond. Nicor crews were on the scene to assess the situation and begin repairing the damage at 10:58 a.m., Caragol said.
The gas remained on throughout the early part of the repair. It was shut off at 3:06 p.m. and was still off at 4:30 p.m. as repairs neared completion.
No Nicor customers were affected by the shut off, Caragol said.
