Elgin woman charged with identity theft
The 41-year-old victim of an identity theft was recently informed by the IRS she owed back taxes on $22,024.40 she earned from two local temporary employment agencies.
She told police she hadn't worked for the agencies and that someone else created a telephone account in her name that was in collections for nonpayment.
Police said a clerk at one of the temporary agencies identified a photo of the woman using the stolen information, and Rosa Flores-Velasco, 37, of 300 Dundee Ave., Apt. 2, Elgin, was arrested Thursday.
She was charged with felony identity theft at a bond hearing Friday.
She had used the false information between August 2006 and Nov. 13, 2008, according to a police report.
Flores-Velasco admitted to police she purchased the victim's information in Chicago a few years ago for $500 and used the victim's name, Social Security number and birth date to obtain employment and the telephone account, police said.
Flores-Velasco had a resident alien card with her photo and the victim's name and information on it.
Rosa Flores-Velasco's bond was set at $5,000 and she was taken to the Kane County jail Friday morning.
She is scheduled to appear at the Kane County Judicial Center on Dec. 3.
