2 charged in Glen Ellyn man's murder

A man and woman were charged Friday with the murder of a Glen Ellyn man who died in a robbery at his store in Chicago, police said.

Elvin Payton, 26, and Beatrice Rosado, 24, both of the 700 block of North Avers Avenue, Chicago, each are charged with first-degree murder. Rosado also is charged with battery.

The pair are accused in the shooting death of 55-year-old Michael Norton at his business in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood. They are scheduled for bond court today.

"It appears it was a motive of robbery," said Chicago Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

Norton's Sweet Shop, 4759 W. North Ave., had been in Norton's family for 35 years.

Police found the store owner about 7:15 p.m. May 14 while responding to a report of a robbery. He was apparently shot in the back of the head, authorities said.

Norton's sister has said it was not the first fatal confrontation at the store, as Norton shot and killed a robber there in 1991.
