Meadows hopes to wheel out new recycling bins
Rolling Meadows residents could soon be recycling their recycling bins.
Aldermen on Tuesday appeared to back a plan to add new 65-gallon wheeled recycling carts. They plan to formally vote on the proposal next Tuesday. The new carts could be in place by January.
The change would come at a cost of about $1 more per month for residents, officials said.
A yearlong test of more than 600 residents resulted in ringing endorsements, so city officials are ready to make it citywide.
"We love our cart," said 1st Ward Alderman John Pitzaferro, who is among the residents using the new carts. "We've definitely increased the amount we recycle because of it."
It's also easy to navigate, he said. His 5-year-old son wheels it down the driveway.
Alderman Barb Lusk, who represents the 2nd Ward, asked whether there would be a cost difference should residents prefer a cart smaller than 65 gallons.
Fred Vogt, city public works director, said it would cost no extra.
In 2004, the city approved a four-year contract with Groot Recycling and Waste Services of Elk Grove Village. As part of the agreement, Groot offered the free test of the new bins.
City officials want to extend their current contract with Groot, which expires at the end of 2008, to lock in better prices and get the recycling carts by January.
Alderman Larry Buske, of the 3rd Ward, asked how they fared against snowdrifts on the curb. Officials said they barely waver.
Fifth Ward Alderman Glenn Adams asked what residents would do with the old recycling bins.
Vogt said they are recyclable.
"So, we can take our recycling bins and stick them in the recycling bins," Adams said.
