Here's how to report hazardous spills

Ever wonder what steps to take to report hazardous material spills in Elgin?

Hazardous materials are substances that because of their chemical, physical, or biological nature, pose potential risks to life, health, or property if they aren't handled correctly, according to the city's Web site.

To report an incident all you have to do is dial 911, but do it right after you see a spilled chemical substance.

Stay away from the site and do your best to keep others away as well, as only trained personnel are authorized to respond to this sort of situation.

For more information about hazardous materials and spills, call the Elgin Fire Department at (847) 931œ6175.

Meanwhile, if you need to get rid of hazardous household items such as pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paint and the like, call the Household Hazardous Waste Hotline and they'll pick it up for free.

The number is (800) HHW-PKUP or (800) 449œ7587.
