Authorities deem shooting at Spring Hill Mall gang-related
Two men made their first court appearances Thursday in the shooting of a man at Carpentersville's side of Spring Hill Mall, a matter authorities say was gang-related.
Juan C. Garcia and Oscar Jacobo likely will be indicted in the March 27 shooting before their next court dates, said Andy Horvat, a Kane County prosecutor.
Garcia and Jacobo, 18-year-old Carpentersville residents, are charged with attempted murder, armed violence and aggravated battery in the incident in the parking lot outside Kohl's.
The shooting, which left a 19-year-old Carpentersville man seriously injured, has been linked to gang activity, Horvat said. This is the first time authorities have provided any insight regarding a motive.
Additional details could be disclosed when Garcia, of 1501 Northlake Parkway, and Jacobo, of 6018 Hampton Drive, are arraigned, he said.
At brief appearances before Judge Robert Spence, Jacobo requested additional time to hire a lawyer and had his case continued to April 18. Garcia has an attorney and is due in court again May 9.
Both men are jailed on $75,000 bond.
The shooting was reported at 6:30 p.m. and is thought to be the first at the mall, which is on the West Dundee-Carpentersville border.
